Style Characteristics

•  Asymmetrical façade with emphasis on verticality

•  One or two story

•  Often has a front-facing gable

•  Decorative trusses

•  Bracketed posts

•  "Gingerbread" in the form of spindlework, and enriched dentils

•  Textured shingles and masonery

•  Patterned horizontal siding

•  Stories often decorated with different materials

•  Asymetrical porches often within the main structure of the house; usually on the upper floor and often wrap-around

•  Large windows with multi-pane upper sashes and single pane lower sashes

•  Main doorway is often off-central axis of the façade. Quite often with a stained glass transom and sidelights flanking the door.

•  Typically has an irregular roof shape with dormers

•  Cylindrical tower with conically pointed roof
