Style Characteristics

•  Opulent style loosely based on monumental French chateaus and castles of 16 th century

•  Façade and exterior walls are of masonry, usually smooth and squared limenstone or brick

•  An attic story

•  A single or continuous balcony

•  Prominent use of vertical elements such as pilasters, finials, and hip knobs

•  Façade us often ornamented with gargoyles, griffins, or shallow ornamental relief

•  An ornate hipped roof this is either stteply pitched to a ridge or tuncated by a horizontal surface

•  Often a railing or cast-iron cresting is seen on the roof

•  Seen with cylindrical corner turret having a conical roof

•  Tall decorative chimneys and ornamental chimney caps

•  Windows are frequently in pairs, usually divided by heavy stone mullions or seet in basket-handle arches

•  Semicircular bay windows

•  Exterior doors usually are set in semicircular arches or basket-handle arches.

•  Often there is a canopy over the entry door for shelter.
